On May 25, 2023, the director of the Center for strategic research under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Khayriddin Usmonzoda met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Sweden Thomas Danestad. At the beginning of the meeting, Khayriddin Usmonzoda welcomed the honorable ambassador to Tajikistan and interpreted his visit to the Center for strategic research under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan as a factor in strengthening cooperation between Tajikistan and Sweden.
During the conversation, the director of the Center for strategic research expressed his views on the changing political and economic situation in the region and the world and considered it necessary and important to strengthen and expand relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of Sweden in all areas of mutual interests.
Assessment of the situation in the region and the world, the expansion of bilateral relations between the countries, especially to establish cooperation between the think tanks of both countries, were the main topics of this meeting. In particular, the parties exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and its threats and dangers to the region and the world. Especially, the director of the Center for strategic research under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan noted that after the change of power in Afghanistan, the situation on the southern border of the country has become even more sensitive, in particular, the illegal drugs trafficking continues to increase, and were registered many cases of crossing the border to Tajikistan, by Afghan terrorists. Especially, it was emphasized that the Kingdom of Sweden is a supporter of peace and stability in this country. The Director of the Center mentioned that the Swedish side can effectively use the transport corridors of the Republic of Tajikistan for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
Also, the parties emphasized the need to further expand and strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in the fields of politics, economy, education, health, environment, and climate change within the framework of the new Strategy of the European Union in Central Asia.
It was said that the flow of goods and products between Tajikistan and the Kingdom of Sweden is not very satisfactory, considering the possibilities. Tajikistan has vast opportunities in the fields of tourism, investment, energy, and the processing and mining of minerals and precious stones. In order to increase the level of economic cooperation between Tajikistan and Sweden, it is necessary to make good use of all available opportunities and capabilities, it was emphasized in the meeting of the director of the Center for strategic research under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Khayriddin Usmonzoda, with the ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden, Thomas Danestad. The parties also noted the need to expand cooperation between experts on the two sides.
Specific proposals were made regarding the strengthening of cooperation between the intellectual centers of both countries in order to form a realistic idea of the state of Tajikistan’s development, cooperation with neighboring countries, development goals, and the role of the Republic of Tajikistan in solving global issues. The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden was motivated by this proposal and stated that he will try to establish bilateral cooperation between the think tanks of Tajikistan and Sweden as soon as possible.
In turn, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Republic of Tajikistan Thomas Danestad expressed his gratitude to the management of the Center for strategic research for the warm welcome and emphasized his readiness to strengthen and expand bilateral friendly relations with Tajikistan in various fields.
At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed confidence in holding joint scientific-practical meetings in various areas of cooperation between the two countries in the future.
The meeting was held in the spirit of sincerity and a friendly atmosphere.
