NOVEMBER 6 — CONSTITUTION DAY OF THE REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN

A symbol of independence, rule of law, and national unity
In today’s world, countries face many new challenges—from global conflicts to rapid changes in technology. The Constitution serves as a strong guide through these times, showing a nation’s values, goals, and hopes for a fair and peaceful future. For Tajikistan, November 6 is a meaningful day when people celebrate peace, freedom, and unity.
On November 6, 1994, during a difficult time of building the country, the people of Tajikistan voted to accept the Constitution—the most important law of the land. More than 3.8 million citizens took part in the vote, and over 90 percent supported it. This moment marked a turning point in Tajikistan’s history, helping the country become independent and begin its journey toward growth and stability.
The Constitution includes key ideas such as independence, protecting the country’s borders, respect for the law, human rights and freedoms, separation of powers, and political diversity. Since its adoption, additional amendments have been made to the Constitution. In 1999, changes helped strengthen democratic systems. In 2003, updates improved government authority and economic development. In 2016, new ideas were added about leadership, youth involvement, and modern governance.
On the 30th anniversary of the Constitution, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation Honorable Emomali Rahmon said that “The Constitution of independent Tajikistan shows the freedom and independence of the people”. He called it a strong foundation for building a democratic, legal, and secular country, and said it has helped bring peace, unity, and progress. He also described the Constitution as a living document that reflects the people’s hopes for justice, development, and peace.
The First article of the Constitution begins with the words: “The Republic of Tajikistan is a sovereign, democratic, legal, secular, and unitary state.” “Also, Article Five states that people’s rights and freedoms are of the highest value, and that life, honor, dignity, and other natural rights must be protected. Another article guarantees that all citizens are equal under the law, regardless of their nationality, gender, language, religion, political views, or social status”. These rules help build trust between the government and the people.
Over the past 30 years, Tajikistan has made strong achievements in many areas. The literacy rate remains very high—more than 99 percent—which shows the country’s focus on education. The healthcare system has improved, and people now live longer than before. Roads, hospitals, and energy systems have been developed, helping people enjoy better living conditions. Many schools and universities have been built or renovated, giving young people more chances to study and grow. These achievements were possible because of the Constitution, which supports fairness, justice, and the rule of law. It helped create a peaceful and stable society where people can work, learn, and build a better future. The Constitution continues to guide the country toward development and unity.
Every year on November 6, people across Tajikistan celebrate Constitution Day with festivals, concerts, exhibitions, and special lessons in schools and universities. Students read articles from the Constitution, take part in contests and debates, and learn about law and government. Cultural centers host exhibitions about the history of the Constitution, and patriotic songs and poems are performed in public squares.
In Rudaki Park in Dushanbe, many people gather to hear speeches from students, poets, and public figures. Artists in traditional clothes perform dances, and the national anthem and parts of the Constitution are read aloud. One line often heard is: “We, the people of Tajikistan, recognizing our responsibility to the past, present, and future, affirm the Constitution of our independent Motherland.”
Understanding the Constitution is more than just knowing the law—it shows love and respect for one’s country. Every citizen, young or old, has a role in keeping peace, following the law, and helping society grow. The Constitution is a symbol of unity, a promise of rights and freedoms, and a guide for a better future. May the values of the Constitution—equality, freedom, and dignity—live in our hearts and inspire us to create, work, and love our homeland.
